VMware announced Open Source desktop client for VMware View

Mike DiPetrillo blogged today about the very good decision of VMware to make the sourcecode of the VMware View client available as of today.

Although clicking on the link mentioned in the article didn’t reveal any code yet, I hope it will come soon.

One of the most heard complaints was that there wasn’t a real client available for other operating systems like Linux and OSX. With the release of the source code this might change real soon.

Like Mike said:

This is an incredible leadership move by VMware to give a kickstart to the true universal client. Just judging by the numerous joint quotes from partners in the press release everyone is really excited about this. Now partners can freely develop on and embed the client into all sorts of devices from cell phones to set top boxes to PCs and laptops.

to be honest, I think it’s a pity that VMware isn’t providing a client themselves. On the other hand, it’s a leadership move indeed. I’m very curious what initiatives will pop up from this.
