The Diary of a VMworld 2010 Blogger – Tuesday
Wednesday, October 13th, 2010, by Edwin WeijdemaDuring VMworld Europe 2010 in Copenhagen I will be keeping a diary to show what a blogger’s life is all about.

7:00
The alarm clock is buzzing away happily. Good morning all a nice day ahead again. Time to move away from my bed and get ready. Booting the laptop to check the vmguru.nl stats and see what is happening out there in the world. Stats seem to be frozen so asking Alex if he can check.
7:04
While Alex is checking why the stats aren’t working I start shaving and washing myself. I hear some power words and Alex mumbling loudly that the programmers should make some decent documented manual or troubleshooting guide so you can find out why stats are broken.

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010, by Erik ScholtenAt the end of the first day of VMworld 2010 we as vExperts got a nice treat from our spiritual father and mentor, John Troyer
John arranged a meeting with VMware CTO, Steve Herrod.
After a brief introduction from John and some vExpert related information Steve took over. He expressed his gratitude for the effort vExperts spent contributing to the VMware community. He also introduced the members of his own team and the VMware leadership group, engineers as well product group members.
You can watch John Troyer’s and Steve Herrod’s speech below.
Afterward we met a lot of the vExperts we already knew virtually but now we can add a face to the name. We also had a brief talk with Steve Herrod and he introduced us to the new European CTO, Paul Strong, who will be working from the UK shortly.

Just woke up, maybe that phone that keeps ringing in the distance is the one who caused me to awake from my deep sleep… mmmm no its my own phone but where did I put it. Careful not to sit up and jump out of bed or I will be laying down on my face on the hotel room floor 2 meters below
Ahh it is my lovely wife waking me up
Careful to get out of the bunk bed and trying to jump onto the small stairs hanging at the bed.
Alex got some fear in his sleepy eyes maybe because some gorilla just jumped onto a small stairs close to his head, morning mate.
VMworld 2010 Keynote session
Tuesday, October 12th, 2010, by Erik Scholten
The second day of VMworld Europe 2010, which is actually day one for none VMware Partners, as usual, the key note session opens with a video. This time, it’s a ‘fake’ documentary discussing ‘What is the cloud?‘ The video compares “cloud computing” to pizza and to The Matrix, where the narrator of the documentary goes to visit the Oracle and is told his mind is a dumb terminal. Besides that there are funny references like the Azure blue skies. Pretty funny!
After that Maurizio Carlo opened the keynote session with the message that VMworld is not about VMware delivering, its about customers, developers, partners interacting together to shape the future of virtualization.
The VMworld event in Europe has grown bigger and bigger. Last years in Cannes there where 4500 to 4700 attendees. This year VMware set a target of 5000 attendees but despite the difficult economical times VMworld Europe 2010 attracted 6000+ attendees.
Next on stage is Rick Jackson, Chief Marketing Officer at VMware
Rick explains the ‘Virtual roads, actual clouds‘ theme and wonders ‘Where is the intersection between virtual roads and actual clouds?’ Well it’s here in Copenhagen!
Building the VMworld 2010 Solution Exchange
Tuesday, October 12th, 2010, by Erik ScholtenOn the Solution Exchange floor you will find almost every company that has something to offer to the virtualization solution. Next to the sessions this is the place to be to learn about new products and do some networking.
As you can see it takes a lot of hard work to create the Solution Exchange. There is still some work left, but I’m sure they will manage it before the Solution Exchange opens. It definitely is worth checking out.

Impressions of VMworld 2010 – Day One: Partner day

I am awake early today. Maybe because it is the day to go on a vRoadtrip to Copenhagen with the VMguru crew J Time to check my e-mail and twitter flow to get up to speed. More and more bloggers, speakers, partners and VMware personal is moving towards Copenhagen. Just follow the flow of tweets…
8:30
Time for a shower and shave I reckon. Ahh that feels good fresh and fruity! Packing my bag with cloths and such I will need next couple of days. Now time to gather all electronic gadgets I will need. AC adapters, network cables, laptop, mobile phone, business cards and an alarm clock. The bag feels heavy.
VMworld 2010 Partner keynote
Monday, October 11th, 2010, by Erik Scholten
.
For Partners, VMworld Europe 2010, started today with the keynote session.
Maurizio Carli opened the keynote session welcoming all VMware Partners.
VMworld Europe 2010 in Copenhagen will host more than 6000 attendees in the coming four days, 1500 of which are VMware Partners.
Last year VMware has achieved a growth of 41% in these difficult times. Worldwide 85% of this business goes through VMware Partners, in EmaMEA even 95% goes through VMware Partners.
Next up was VMware CEO, Paul Maritz.
Paul foresees fundamental change in the nearby furture which is not possible with old technology. VMware leadership is fundamental in this change. During this change, virtualization allows customers to do more with less operating expenses and move to the cloud.
According to Paul, cloud computing is an approach to computing and does not mean that it all happens in remote data centers. VMware continues to focus on their bedrock and expands and adds layers to that foundation.
New IT infrastructures are driven by operational value, not by capital value. The new layers VMware has introduced regarding security, management and cloud management solutions.
VMGuru.nl VMworld vRoadTrip
Monday, October 11th, 2010, by Erik Scholten
After an eight hour, 850 km drive we arrived in Copenhagen. The trip wasn’t too bad. The problem is you can’t see to much of the countryside when you drive at speeds above 210 km/h. Luckily we made some pictures and videos along the way.
Below is a compilation of the footage we shot so far.

The journey to the cloud begins
Sunday, October 10th, 2010, by Anne Jan Elsinga
Today is the day that we will all remember. Today will mark the start of a new era. In a couple of hours we will be arriving in Copenhagen, Denmark to give you, our readers, the latest info on virtualization, cloud and cloud related items.
Other than the last couple of years we’re traveling by car, not by plane. A couple of people made fun of us, but that doesn’t hurt us. It is only a 7.5 hour drive (according to Google Maps) without any traffic jams. We hope to arrive somewhere in the early evening in our hotel.

Change in RES Software product suite
Tuesday, October 5th, 2010, by Edwin Weijdema
Today one of my colleagues pointed out some of the changes around the RES Software product suite, which probably will be announced on the Citrix Synergy 2010 in Berlin, tomorrow.
RES Software has restyled there logo and color scheme. They also renamed RES PowerFuse en RES Wisdom into RES Workspace Manager and RES Automation Manager. The new names sound logical to me.
It looks like they pulled out the RES Subscriber feature out of the PowerFuse Enterprise edition and made it an additional product named RES Virtual Desktop Extender (VDX). Also there will be no more different editions to choose from instead you can choose the functionality in modules, based on your needs.
