The Diary of a VMworld 2010 Blogger – Tuesday

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010, by

During VMworld Europe 2010 in Copenhagen I will be keeping a diary to show what a blogger’s life is all about.

Tuesday 12 October 2010

7:00

The alarm clock is buzzing away happily. Good morning all a nice day ahead again. Time to move away from my bed and get ready. Booting the laptop to check the vmguru.nl stats and see what is happening out there in the world. Stats seem to be frozen so asking Alex if he can check.

7:04

While Alex is checking why the stats aren’t working I start shaving and washing myself. I hear some power words and Alex mumbling loudly that the programmers should make some decent documented manual or troubleshooting guide so you can find out why stats are broken.

VMworld 2010 Partner keynote

Monday, October 11th, 2010, by

.

For Partners, VMworld Europe 2010, started today with the keynote session.

Maurizio Carli opened the keynote session welcoming all VMware Partners.

VMworld Europe 2010 in Copenhagen will host more than 6000 attendees in the coming four days, 1500 of which are VMware Partners.

Last year VMware has achieved  a growth of 41% in these difficult times. Worldwide 85% of this business goes through VMware Partners, in EmaMEA even 95% goes through VMware Partners.

Next up was VMware CEO, Paul Maritz.

Paul foresees fundamental change in the nearby furture which is not possible with old technology. VMware leadership is fundamental in this change. During this change, virtualization allows customers to do more with less operating expenses and move to the cloud.

According to Paul, cloud computing is an approach to computing and does not mean that it all happens in remote data centers. VMware continues to focus on their bedrock and expands and adds layers to that foundation.

New IT infrastructures are driven by operational value, not by capital value. The new layers VMware has introduced regarding security, management and cloud management solutions.

VMworld 2010 update

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010, by

This week VMworld 2010 is held but unfortunately VMGuru.nl is not there to bring you the latest news from San Fransisco.

But of course we scan the Internet, follow twitter and have close contact with VMware personnel on-site.

First of all, if you can not attend VMworld like us but want to stay up-to-date check out:

VMworld 2010 buzz and the VMworldTV Channel.

VMware vCloud Director

The biggest news from VMworld today is the introduction of the VMware vCloud Director, formerly known as project Redwood. With the VMware vCloud Director enterprises can build secure, multitenant private clouds by grouping infrastructure resources into virtual datacenters and publishing them to users through Web-based portals and other software interfaces as fully automated, catalog-based services. This solution provides a clear path to cloud computing by giving customers the power to leverage existing investments and the flexibility to extend capacity among clouds.

For more information go here.

Or watch the video on VMware KB TV.

VMware View 4.5

The other big announcement was the VMware View 4.5 release in the beginning of September.

For more information see yesterdays blog post.

iPad VMware View client.

Besides the VMware View client for the Mac, which is part of the VMware View 4.5 package, a very nice addition to VMware View will be the upcoming VMware View client for the iPad. VMware is going Apple! Great news in my opinion because now I have an extra excuse to get myself an iPad :) .

For more information and a short demo visit VMworld TV.

Bye bye ESX.

Another public secret is the end of life for VMware ESX. With the release of vSphere 4.1, VMware announced that this will be the last version which will have an ESX version. At VMworld this seems to be one of the primary messages besides all the new products, features and announcements. New releases of VMware ESX will only come as ESXi.

Visit VMworld TV for an interview with Sean and Charu fro.m the ESXi team about what this will mean for customers. Is ESXi up to the challenge? I don’t think so! Almost all my implementations in the last two years have been based on VMware ESXi and I have never encountered any problem regarding back-up-, UPS- or monitoring agent which couldn’t be solved. So I’m happy, one less choice to make.

VMware acquires Integrien and TriCipher.

Another announcement done at VMworld 2010 is the acquisition of Integrien and riCipher to expand VMware’s stack of cloud enabling software. Integrien is a company which specializes in performance analytics and TriCipher is a federated-access-management software provider.

Integrien’s real-time performance analytics software, called Alive, can be combined with VMware’s vCenter virtualisation products, allowing organisations to derive performance summaries of their infrastructure and virtualised applications.

TriCipher’s software will provide VMware infrastructure with a single set of authentication and security controls that can be used to bridge public and private clouds.

cannes_03Were now 2 weeks from the start of VMWorld Europe 2009 in Cannes.cannes_05

We are looking for substitutes to take over our projects and are clearing our schedules because we are at Cannes last week of February. Many colleagues ask us if we are going to report from Cannes again as we did last year. The answer is a definite and enthusiastic ‘YES‘. Check out www.VMGuru.nl from Feb 22-27 for ‘live’ reports from THE European virtualization event!

If you can’t wait ……… Check out our photo’s from last year.

Love for VMware starts at 8 months

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009, by

VMware promoteamLast year when I attended VMWorld Europe 2008 my wife was 9 months pregnant. As a souvenir I brought a little VMware teddy bear and a VMWorld bib with the text ‘Embracing your Virtual World – VMWORLD 2008‘. He is now 8 months old and this weekend I couldn’t resist to take his picture wearing the bib as proof that the love for VMware starts at a very young age. We can’t help it, it is congenital!

Strange thing is that these children still don’t know what a virtual machine is. ;-)

It’s one and a half month before the first day of VMWorld Europe 2009 in Cannes. Last year it was a great succes so as soon as registration opened I registered as soon as possible.

I’m looking forward to Feb 22 as we fly to Cannes the day before the Partner Day. Hopefully we managed to arrange the blogger-seats Richard Garsthagen offered us so we can bring you all the news from Cannes as it is presented to us.

To get in the mood here’s a video of the highlights of VMWorld Europe 2008.

VMWorld Europe 2009 tease

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008, by

Yesterday Matthijs Haverink from Virtualfuture.info posted an interview with Richard Garsthagen (VMware). This video was made at the VMUG meeting in NL last friday. Richard reveals some details about VMWorld Europe 2009 like that there will be around 150 break-out sessions and you won’t have to presign-up. If sessions are popular they will be repeated. Check out the video below for the entire interview.

Presentations ‘LIVE’ from VMworld 2008

Friday, October 24th, 2008, by

October 13th I met Eric Sloof, the man behind NTPRO.NL, at the VMware Partner Forum 2008 in Brasschaat. He was busy filming various presentations. Today I visited Erik’s site and discovered his video collection. If you are interested in the ‘live’ presentations of VMWorld 2008 or some nice product demo’s, check out Erik’s videos on Vimeo.
